
Soccer Drops Game to Mean Green

DENTON, Texas - The Southern Miss soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to North Texas on the road at the Mean Green Soccer Complex in Denton, Texas. After opening up the Conference USA season on the road, the Golden Eagles will host a pair of C-USA games next weekend.
Offensively, Southern Miss recorded nine shots, including four shots on goal. Ashley Johnson, Somer Jones and Karen Torres each recorded two shots apiece on the day. In addition, Anya Koren, Devin McGee and Becky McMullan had one shot apiece. Johnson, Jones, McGee and Torres each had a shot on goal.
Defensively, Shelby Presnell was charged with the loss. The true freshman recorded three saves, but surrendered four goals in the loss. Presnell's counterpart Jackie Kerestine posted a shutout recording saves on each of the four shots placed on goal.
North Texas was the first team to score, netting a goal in the 32nd minute. The Mean Green's Leah Cox sent a pass into the box. UNT's Kaylah Hunter finished with a shot from inside the box to put the home team on the scoreboard.
Just before the half, the Mean Green doubled their lead with goal in the 43rd minute. Kelci Slaughter scored an unassisted goal to increase the advantage to 2-0.
North Texas struck fast in the second half. The Mean Green used a goal by Amber Haggerty off of an assist by Karla Pineda in the 46th minute to increase the lead to 3-0. The Green and White extended their lead with a goal in the 52nd minute. Rachel Holden scored the goal with assists by Marchelle Davis and Pineda.
Southern Miss returns to the pitch this weekend with a pair of home conference games against UAB and Middle Tennessee. The Golden Eagles play the Blazers on Friday (4:00 p.m.) before hosting the Blue Raiders on Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m.).
