HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team takes a two-game winning streak into a pair of midweek home games against Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday and Alabama on Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles and Delta Devils have a slated 6 p.m., start, and it will be $1 hot dog night for that contest. USM meets the Crimson Tide the following day in a 4 p.m., game. The Alabama game is a designated BLACKOUIT game, and Golden Eagle fans are asked to wear black for the contest. Fans can by the official BLACKOUT shirt from Elite Screenprinting located on 40th Ave., by Mugshots Grill and Bar. They will also be handing out rally towels to the first 500 fans in attendance that day.
Southern Miss finds itself 4-3 on the season after taking two-of-three games from Troy last weekend. The Golden Eagles scored a season-high eight runs in the series finale Sunday in an 8-1 victory.
It has been the pitching, though, for Southern Miss that has been outstanding over the team's first seven games.
The Golden Eagle staff holds a 1.65 team earned run average and has given up more than three runs in a contest once this season. The relief corps has been especially dominant as they have not allowed an earned run over the last 26 innings of work.
Third-year coach Scott Berry will send freshman righthander Taylor Nunez (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against the Delta Devils and then junior righthander Andrew Pierce (0-1, 3.38) set to start against the Crimson Tide.
On offense, freshman Mason Robbins leads the way with a .417 batting average. Senior Kameron Brunty ranks next at .364, while junior Dillon Day holds a .304 batting mark.
Following the two midweek contests, Southern Miss travels to Auburn for a three-day tournament. The Golden Eagles are set to face Charleston Southern at 2 p.m., Friday, Purdue at noon, Saturday, and then conclude the event with a 3 p.m., game versus host Auburn on Sunday.
