The road tilt marks the only game away from home this month for the Golden Eagles (2-1), who play eight of nine games at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to start the campaign.
The Golden Eagles opened the season by defeating Nicholls State in a doubleheader, 5-1 and 5-2, on Sunday after dropping the opening game Friday, 5-4. Southern Miss saw eight freshmen, either true or redshirt, see action in the opening series.
Connor Barron, A true freshman who prepped at Sumrall High School, led the way for the Eagle freshmen with a 5-for-13 weekend for a .385 batting average to go along with team highs of two doubles and three runs batted in. Michael Sterling, a redshirt freshman from Ackerman, Miss., knocked in two big runs in the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday, while Alpharetta, Ga., redshirt freshman lefthander Jake Drehoff limited the Colonels to one run over six innings in the opening game of the twinbill.
Senior Kameron Brunty, who missed the opener due to a one-game team suspension, leads the team in hitting with a .571 batting average (4-for-7), while junior Dillon Day and Sterling are next at .500.
Junior transfer Andrew Pierce, a right-handed pitcher for the Golden Eagles, will get the start on the mound in his debut for Southern Miss. The Stringer, Miss., native was a NJCAA First-Team All-American last season for Jones Junior College as he helped lead the Bobcats to a runner-up finish in the World Series.
This will be the 60th meeting between the two schools with Southern Miss holding a 43-16 advantage in the series. The two teams will also play at Pete Taylor Park March 27 in a single contest.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from IMG College baseball flagship station WKZW-FM (94.3) in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area. The remainder of the network is slated to carry the men's basketball game at UTEP later that evening.
