The Golden Eagles (34-11 overall, 12-4 C-USA) won their second consecutive contest as well as posting their 20th victory at home this season, marking the ninth-straight year they have won at least 20 games at home.
Tyler Koelling added three hits and Adam Doleac collected a pair in the 10-hit Golden Eagle attack as the home squad had to overcome an early deficit.
Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Ashley Graeter singled to rightfield with one out. Kameron Brunty then walked before Koelling laced a single to right to score a run. B.A. Vollmuth then tied the score with a sacrifice fly to rightfield.
Southern Miss went ahead for good in the next frame as Bales followed a Doleac double with a RBI two-base hit of his own down the leftfield line to put USM up for good. Bales then drove in an insurance run in the seventh with a single through the right side.
It was UAB, though, that took the early advantage. The Blazers capitalized on a fielding error to open the game and manufactured a run on wild pitch that scored Nick Crawford. UAB added its only other run in the fourth on a Coy Arrowhead RBI double.
McInnis allowed two runs, of which one was earned, on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six innings to capture the victory and improve to 7-1. Reliever Chase Horn followed the starter and retired all nine batters he faced over the final three innings, including one strikeout, to get his third save of the campaign.
UAB starter Ryan Woolley (6-5) allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings on seven hits and five walks with four strikeouts to suffer the loss.
Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m., Saturday. It is Military/First Responders Appreciation Day and military and first repsonders showing their IDs can get a $3 ticket. A pregame ceremony is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
