Southern Miss Head Coach Scott Berry...
On East Carolina pitcher Seth Maness...
"He's had a great career there at East Carolina. We didn't have very good at-bats against him at all. I was worried that the late night and the emotional loss last night, which I thought we played extremely hard last night, as both teams did. But I was worried that we might come out and do what we did. I was hoping that, and challenged them not to do it. But we didn't play well enough to do anything.
"Offensively, we're stuggling here late in the year, in all honestly. That's the second second time we've been shutout since 2008, and the second time in the last two weeks. We've got to get some things going. We're going to approach the next week as a whole new season and go from there. Our record next week is 0-0."
On new players having to contribute...
"I just told them, `Injuries happen. We're not asking guys to hit home runs and doubles. We're asking guys to compete and get on base so the guys that have been playing and hitting all year can drive us in, and that's there job. That's there job to do it then because they've had the at-bats."
On the possibility of hosting a regional...
"Those things are out of our control. The one thing that was in our control was to come out and win this game, and we didn't do it. We knew the stakes going in. I told them the stakes going in. That's what we were playing for. We weren't playing for a conference championship. But what we were playing for was the right to hopefully host. We didn't do enough tonight to probably do that, but we'll see what the committee decides on that and go from there."
On Josh Thomason's performance...
"I thought Josh Thomason, once again, pitched very, very well. He gave us a chance to win. If we, back in the third inning with first or third and one out, get that run in, then maybe it's a difference story. Maybe it gives us a little bit of life. But when we fail to get that in, once again, we go back to the late night, and you can't do that. You have to push through it."
East Carolina Head Coach Billy Godwin
On Seth Maness pitching performance ...
"He (Seth Maness) had everything working. What a great way to come in here against a great Southern Miss club and finish his Conference USA career. His career is certainly not over, but with all the great things he's done in our program and in Conference USA is outstanding.
"He broke our school record a couple of weeks ago and has never talked about it. He probably has not clue. He just goes out and competes everyday. We talk about the process all the time in our program and he just goes through the process. He has a chance to do some special things in his careeer."
On competing in postseason ...
"I'm excited. We have been on the road for 12 days and went 5-1. Yes, we are disappointed we're not playing in the Conference USA championship game, but I am really proud of the way these guys played on a tough stretch like this. We're going to go out next week and play for the real championship in order to get to Omaha."
On the offense ...
"We did some great things situational hitting. The hit-and-run kind of set the table with (Philip) Clark and (Mike) Ussery. We did a good job. We are proud of the way our guys swung the bats."
