MEMPHIS - Adam Doleac blasted a grand slam and B.A. Vollmuth added a two-run home run to lead No. 14 Southern Miss in an 8-5 Conference USA comeback victory over Memphis here Sunday afternoon at FedExPark.
With the victory, the Golden Eagles (23-8 overall, 6-3 C-USA) averted a three-game sweep by the Tigers and also snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.
The Golden Eagles found themselves behind 5-0 after two innings as Phillip Chapman collected a three-run home run in the first and UM added two runs in the second on an RBI double by Drew Martinez and a run-scoring single from Chad Zurcher.
UM starter Clayton Gant kept USM off balanced through the first five innings before the visitors scratched home a run in the sixth on a Mark Ellis single. Gant finished the contest with a no decision as he allowed just one run on four hits and five walks over 5 1/3 innings.
Southern Miss then got things going in the seventh. After Tyler Koelling reached to start the inning via a fielding error, Vollmuth walked and Jared Bales walked after a Marc Bourgeois strikeout.
Doleac then took a 1-0 offering off of Dane Sharp over the right-centerfield wall to tie the score at 5-5. It was Doleac's first home run of the season.
Vollmuth then put Southern Miss up for good with a two-run homer in the eighth off of UM closer Ben Paullus, his 10th of the campaign and first since March 26 against Tulane. Justin Diliberto drove in the Golden Eagles' final run in the ninth on a safety squeeze bunt.
Dillon Day threw the final five innings for the Golden Eagles to garner the victory and improve to 1-0 on the season. Day came in to relieve Jonathan Thompson, who allowed five unearned runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts over four-plus innings. Day limited the Tigers (19-12, 3-3) to no runs on four hits with four strikeouts down the stretch.
UM reliever Blake Myers (1-1) gave up a run on a hit to go along with one walk to suffer the loss.
Southern Miss ends an eight-game string of contests away from home Tuesday when they travel to Pearl to face Ole Miss in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
