Women's Tennis Prevails Over Blazers

HATTEISBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team took the doubles point and then four of six singles matches to beat UAB 5-2 Sunday morning at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Lady Eagles took the doubles point when No. 3 Zoë Lee paired with Shannon Rogers beat Brittany DeFelice and Caroline Faught 8-2. No. 2 Åsa Bengtson and Elja van Berlo powered to an 8-3 win over Jenny Cape and Giorgia Romeo to clinch the point.
In singles, Elja van Berlo struck first with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Faught at No. 4. UAB earned a point as Evelien Strijker defeated Bengtson at No.2, 6-1, 6-3. Rogers finished next with a straight set win over DeFelice, winning 6-3, 6-4 to push the score to 3-1. Stephanie Dellocono clinched her match over Paula Alvarez, 7-5, 6-3. Cape topped Lee at No. 5, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, before Vroni van Berlo claimed a three set win over Romeo at No. 1, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-8.
Southern Miss will play a re-scheduled match against Louisiana-Lafayette at 10:30 a.m., Monday.
