HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss freshman Åsa Bengtson battled in the No. 1 singles spot in securing a 4-3 over UNO Wednesday afternoon in women's tennis action at the USM Tennis Courts.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 3-4 while UNO drops to 1-3.
The Golden Eagles won the doubles point when the Eagle duo of Bengtson and Stephanie Dellocono paired to beat Amber Garza and Kozue Matsumoto, 8-3, on court one in clinching the point. Zoë Lee and Shannon Rogers battled Kristina Martic and Sofija Karalic at No. 2 doubles before falling 8-7 (7-5). Since UNO was playing with only four players, the Eagles gained a win at No. 3 doubles by a walkover.
Heading into the singles, USM automatically held a 3-0 lead with the benefit of two points gained in walkovers at No. 5 and No. 6 singles' positions.
The Privateers roared back to take three of the four singles matches. Karalic defeated Alex Bradley, 7-5, 6-2, at the four position. Martic battled Dellocono at the No. 2 singles and came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Rogers and Garza tied up in a three-setter at No. 3 singles. Rogers took the first set, 6-3, but fell in the second set, 6-4, setting up the super tiebreaker. Garza outlasted Rogers, 1-0 (10-3).
Southern Miss is back in action on Friday when the Golden Eagles host UL-Monroe at 2 p.m., at the USM Tennis Courts.
