Women's Tennis Team Halted by Mississippi State, 6-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team fell 6-1 at Mississippi State Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the A. J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Southern Miss dropped to 2-4 on the season while State posted its first win for a 1-3 record.
The Eagles took an early lead winning two of three in doubles. The Eagles won in the two spot when Åsa Bengtson and Elja van Berlo took down Roseline Dion and Danielle Terpko, 8-1, in dominating fashion. In the three spot USM earned a victory with Zoë Lee and Shannon Rogers knocking off Elizabeth Hall and Vivian Pietraroia to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 advantage. In the one position Stephanie Dellocono and Moorea Williams fell 8-4 to Alexandra Perper and Mariia Ryzhova in a back and forth match.
In singles, the Southern Miss struggled to gain any momentum against the Bulldog squad. At the number two spot, van Berlo lost to Ryzhova after falling in the first set, 6-1, and was force to retire after an injury as State evened the match at 1-1. In the one position, Perper downed Bengtson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Tsiquintseva downed Rogers, 6-1, 6-2, at the four position and then, clinched the match with Terpko defeating Williams, 6-1, 6-1, victory at number three. Mississippi State finished off the sweep in singles with Dion knocking off Lee, 6-4, 6-0, at no. 5 singles and Pietraroia defeating Askew at six by a score of 6-2, 6-4, at no. 6 singles.
Southern Miss begins a four-match homestand beginning with UNO on Feb. 23 with match time set for 2 p.m., at the USM Tennis Courts.
