HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team was ranked No. 30 in the 2012 Collegiate Baseball Preseason poll, released Monday by the publication.
The Golden Eagles, which finished 39-19 last season in reaching their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament, must replace five position player starters, as well as a starting rotation and a closer this spring.
The program, though, enjoyed a stellar recruiting class last season, including a No. 3, by Baseball America and No. 13 by Collegiate Baseball.
Southern Miss, which shared a piece of the regular season league title last season, is the second highest ranked Conference USA institution in the poll and one of three league teams getting mentioned in the Top 40 poll. Rice earned a No. 7 mention, while UCF garnered a No. 36 spot.
The Golden Eagles open the 2012 campaign, Friday, Feb. 17, when they take on Nicholls State for the first of three contests.
