GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior keeper Hannah Vanderboegh came up with three big saves and Southern Miss put five shots on frame, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles fell to Conference USA foe East Carolina, 3-0, on Friday.
Sophomore Danielle Beatty led the squad with a pair of shots including one on goal as Southern Miss forced the attack early.
East Carolina's Amanda Malkiewicz scored her first of two goals on the day in the third minute as Kimmy Cummings and Hali Oughton combined on the assist into the box for their striker.
The Golden Eagles got in three corner kicks in the first 23 minutes but were unable to find the net each time as they held firm for the remainder of the half.
In the 64th minute, Cummings got a goal of her own as Jessica Abshire lobbed a pass into the box that found its way into the lower right corner of the goal.
The Pirates (6-4-1, 1-3-0 C-USA) closed out their scoring in the 84th minute as Malkiewicz added her second goal on an assist from Caty Butler.
Southern Miss (3-8-3, 0-4-1 C-USA) returns to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to Huntington, W.V. to take on C-USA rival Marshall. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
