Choudrant, La. - The Southern Miss men's golf team shot a final round four-under par to win the Squire Creek Invitational. The tournament is hosted by Louisiana Tech and was played at the par 72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country Club.
It is the 21st team title in Golden Eagle history, and the first since they won the 2005 Reynolds Plantation Classic. The final round 284 gave them a 54-hole score of 854 to finish 10-under par, the seventh-best score relative to par in school history. They finished eight shots ahead of second-place Louisiana Tech.
"I'm just so proud of this team, especially (Nick Brown and Derek Plucienski)," said head coach Jerry Weeks. "They've been here for five years. We've had so many (second-place finishes) and finally we got it done. I'm really proud of them. Our young players really stepped up today and really played well. We took it from them."
Senior Derek Plucienski fired a final round best 69 to finish in second-place at seven-under par 209, one shot behind medalist Scott Kelly of Sam Houston State. Plucienski's seven-under par is the sixth-best in school history. His 69 was his third round of par or better for the year and 20th of his career. He now has three top five finishes in his career and six top ten's.
Sophomore Zach Estep closed with a final round 71 to finish with a five-under par 211 in a tie for third-place, which is his first career top five finish. Estep now has a team-high five rounds of par or better on the year and nine for his career.
Freshman Casey Fernandez earned his first career top 20 finish, as he shot a final round 72 to finish one-over par. His 54-hole score of 217 tied his season-best. His 72 is his third round of par or better on the year.
Senior John Kahlden, playing as an individual, and sophomore Kevin Brady tied for 19th-place at five-over par after rounds of 73 and 72, respectively. Kahlden's 54-hole score of 221 is a career best. The 19th-place finish is Kahlden's first career top 20 finish, while it is Brady's fourth.
Senior Nick Brown rounded out the scoring with a final round 75 to finish in a season-best tie for 25th-place.
The men's golf team returns to the links in two weeks when they travel to San Antonio, Texas for the Lone Star Invitational, October 16-18.
