The Golden Eagles are eight-over par, four shots behind 10th-place UT-San Antonio, UT-Arlington and Rice.
Sophomores Zach Estep and Kevin Brady lead Southern Miss in a tie for 31st-place after a one-over par 73. Redshirt senior Derek Plucienski and freshman Casey Fernandez shot a three-over 76 to tie for 59th-place. Redshirt senior Nick Brown is tied for 67th-place after a four-over 76.
New Mexico leads the team competition after the first round, as they are at 14-under par, five shots ahead of second-place Houston.
New Mexico's John Catlin leads the individual competition at eight-under par, two shots ahead of Houston's Roman Robledo and Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor.
The tournament continues tomorrow with the second round beginning at 8:30 p.m.
