HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss All-American pitcher Scott Copeland will begin a new chapter of his baseball career as he was selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball June Free Agent Draft today by the Baltimore Orioles.
Copeland was selected in the 21st round, the 628th pick overall.
Copeland's selection continues a streak of nine consecutive seasons that at least one Golden Eagle player has been drafted by a Major League team, dating back to 2001. Over the nine year span 25 Southern Miss players have been selected by professional teams in the annual free agent draft.
Copeland was sensational in his senior campaign, posting an 11-1 record with a 3.75 ERA. He led C-USA in wins and was second only to Todd McInnis (3.30) in ERA among the league.
In the 2010 C-USA Championship he was 2-0, throwing 11.2 shutout innings. In the Championship game he worked the final 4.2 innings without allowing a hit to lead Southern Miss past Rice. For his efforts he was named the C-USA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
