Santee, Calif. - Southern Miss redshirt senior Paul Apyan shot a final round 75 to finish in a tie for 39th-place at the NCAA Southwest Regional. The tournament is hosted by San Diego State and is being played at the par-72, 7,360 yard Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
Apyan's 39th-place finish was the best finish ever for a Golden Eagle golfer at NCAA Regionals.
"This was a great experience for Paul," said head coach Jerry Weeks. He didn't play near his capabilities. The golf course was set up pretty well for him. But, unfortunately he just didn't hit the ball the way he can. But, overall, this was a great experience for him Paul.
Apyan tied for fourth among golfers playing as individuals. Nick Delio of Cal-State Northridge, who also played as an individual, won medalist honors, firing a three-day total of three-under par 213..
Top-ranked Oregon won the team competition at six-over par, ten shots ahead of Augusta State. Along with Oregon and August State, California, Tennessee and UNLV all advanced to the NCAA Championships.
