Sorrento, Fla. - The Southern Miss men's golf team heads into the second round of the Conference USA Championships in eighth-place. The tournament is being played at the par 72, 7,152-yard RedTail Golf Club.
The Golden Eagles are 16-over par after one round. They are just four shots back of fourth-place Memphis. UCF leads the team competition at four-over par, three shots ahead of second-place Rice.
Redshirt senior Paul Apyan and redshirt sophomore Derek Plucienski lead the Eagles in a tie for 17th-place. They each shot a three-over par 75 and are six shots back of first-place.
Seniors Wes Carter and Brent Hobbs are tied for 27th-place after each shooting a five-over 77, while junior Freddie Janneck closed out the scoring for Southern Miss with a six-over 78 to finish in a tie for 36th-place.
Tulsa's leads the individual competition at three-under par. Christopher Brown of Rice is in second at two-under, and Rice's Michael Whitehead and Simon Ward of UCF are tied for third at even-par.
The tournament continues tomorrow with the second round beginning at 7:30 a.m. with players teeing off holes 1 and 10.
