CHARLESTON, WV. - A day after scoring 16 runs on 18 hits the Southern Miss offense only managed three runs on five hits today in a 6-3 loss to Marshall at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, West Virginia.
"I am very disappointed that our offense did not show up today after we had such a productive day at the plate yesterday," head coach Scott Berry said. "to only manage five hits today is very disappointing."
Junior Todd McInnis took another tough loss after pitching pretty well. He threw 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. While was a little rocky in the first inning, allowing three runs on four singles, he settled down to face only two over the minimum in the final 5.2 innings, scattering four hits without allowing a run. He left the game with a runner on first, who came around to score the fourth run that was credited to him.
McInnis was once again did not get much run support, with only three runs this afternoon. In his last five starts the team is 1-4 and has only supported him with 15 runs.
"I thought Todd settled in and gave us a change after a rough first inning, but once again we did not get much run support for him, "Berry added. " I do not know what the answer is but this has happed several times now where we cannot give him any help."
Southern Miss managed only five hits with Anthony Doss collecting the only extra base hit, a double in the seventh inning.
Marshall jumped out to and early lead with four singles in the bottom of the first including a RBI single by James Lavinskas and a two-RBI single by Josh Valle for an early 3-0 lead.
Southern Miss rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning as Kameron Brunty and Joey Archer singled to start the inning and Anthony Doss drew a walk to load the bases. Travis Graves picked up a RBI by drawing a walk and forcing in Brunty for the Golden Eagles first run. Two batters later Taylor Walker singled to center field platting two more runs and tying the game at three.
Marshall retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh as McInnis allowed a bunt single and two groundouts before being removed for Cody Schlagel, who walked the Kurt Lipton, the first batter he faced to put runner on the corners. Schlagel worked Victor Gomes to a 1-2 count before he lined a double into right-center field, putting Marshall up 5-3.
The Herd added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back lucky break singles off Collin Cargill, who relived Schlagel after he surrendered a lead off single. With a runner at first Cargill surrendered his first single to Isaac Ballou off his glove on a hard hit ball back up the middle, but the ball caromed to no man's land on the left side of the infield for a single. The next hitter, Kirby Pellant hit a soft flare that landed just in front of Taylor Walker at second base and spun away from him, allowing the final run of the game to score.
The two teams will meet tomorrow for the final game of the series at 9:35 CST.
