McInnis Pitches Southern Miss Past ULL

LAFAYETTE, La. - Todd McInnis threw eight shutout innings as Southern Miss defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 4-0 in front of 2,416 fans at "Tigue" Moore Field in Lafayette, La. Friday night.
"I thought Todd was outstanding tonight," head coach Scott Berry said. "He brings a real presence to the mound every Friday night and when you have a guy like that it helps the team all the way around."
McInnis picked up his second win of the season by throwing eight shutout innings, while allowing only four singles and striking out seven ULL (5-3) hitters.
Paxton King worked the ninth inning allowing one hit and striking out three.
Taylor Walker led the offensive attack for Southern Miss with three hits, two RBI and a run scored.
B.A. Vollmuth added in two hits and Travis Graves scored two runs.
Southern Miss (6-3) put together a sting of four consecutive innings from the third through the sixth where they scored a single run in each frame to account for all four runs in the game.
Also tonight Joey Archer extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the fourth inning.
Southern Miss struck for the games first run in the top of the third inning as Travis Graves was hit by the first pitch of the inning and came around to score on Taylor Walker's RBI single, the first Golden Eagle hit of the game.
The black and gold added their second run of the game in the top of the fourth as Archer scored on Adam Doleac's RBI single to make the score 2-0.
Southern Miss added a run with help from the ULL defense in the fifth. Walker singled for the second time in the game and Archer's routine ground ball to third base would have been the third out of the inning but ULL's William Long committed the third error of the game for the Cajun's to extend the inning.
The next Golden Eagle hitter, Vollmuth singled home Walker for a 3-0 lead.
For the fourth consecutive inning Southern Miss scored a run in the top of the sixth as Graves singled and came around to score on a RBI double by Taylor Walker.
The two teams will meet for tomorrow for game two of the series with Scott Copeland toeing the rubber for Southern Miss. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
