Copeland Pitches Baseball to a Series Win at La.- Lafayette

LAFAYETTE. La. - For the second consecutive game the Southern Miss baseball team got outstanding starting pitching as they defeated La. Lafayette 6-2 Saturday afternoon in Lafayette to take the road series.
Scott Copeland held the ULL offense to one run over eight innings of work, allowing seven hits and striking out six to pick up his second win of the season.
"For Scott (Copeland) to come out and pitch the way he did today was huge," head coach Scott Berry said. "He gave us eight solid innings today and with Todd (McInnis) throwing like he did last night, those two guys have really taken the pressure off our offense and bullpen this weekend."
Collin Cargill made quick work of the Cajuns (5-4) in the ninth, recording three outs on seven pitches. He has not surrendered a hit in 4.2 innings this season and has only faced one hitter over the minimum this year.
Taylor Walker and Travis Graves led the offensive attack for the black and gold for the second consecutive game.
Walker was three-for-four, including a solo home run, with two runs scored and a RBI while Graves went two-for-three with a run and two RBI.
Southern Miss (7-3) drew first blood with a two-run second inning, keyed by a perfect hit and run with Graves at the plate to score B.A. Vollmuth who singled to start the inning. Two batters later Marc Bourgeois singled home Graves for his first RBI of the weekend.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Graves, scoring Vollmuth once again, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Lafayette cracked the score board in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Goulas, snapping an 18 inning scoreless streak by the Southern Miss pitching staff. The Golden Eagles have only surrendered the lone run since the sixth inning vs. La. Monroe on Wednesday.
Walker collected his sixth hit of the series as he left the yard on a solo shot in the top of the seventh, the hit was the 10th of the game for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss has recorded double-digit hits is eight of their 10 games this season.
The black and gold put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth as a two-out routine ground ball hit by Vollmuth was dropped at first base, allowing Walker and Kameron Brunty to score on the play, making the score 6-1.
The Golden Eagles will go for the series sweep tomorrow at "The Tigue." Geoffrey Thomas will get the start for Southern Miss.
