Baseball Cruises to 20-2 Win over Miss. Valley

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team improved to 3-1 with a 20-2 thrashing of Mississippi Valley State in front of 2,852 fans Wednesday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
For Southern Miss, they improved to 24-0 all-time vs. Miss. Valley.
"I thought we played well tonight," head coach Scott Berry said. "What I was most proud of is the way we rebounded after last Sunday's loss."
The Southern Miss offense scored 20 runs on 18 hits this afternoon. Mark Ellis led the attack going four-for-six while B.A. Vollmuth collected three hits, all for extra bases.
Joey Archer, Adam Doleac, Travis Graves and Vollmuth each had three RBI.
In all nine different players had at least one hit today while 12 different Golden Eagles had a run scored.
Archer, Vollmuth and Doleac all hit a home run in the lopsided affair as well.
On the mound senior Jeff Stanley threw five innings of shutout ball allowing only two hits and striking out two.
Mandella Mingo and Josh Jones both saw their first career action out of the bullpen, working an inning a piece. Sophomore Matt Warren worked two innings as well.
Defensively Southern Miss turned four double plays tonight, bringing their season total to 11 through four games. They led the nation in 2009 with 83 twin-killings.
Southern Miss opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with three runs. B.A. Vollmuth started the rally with a leadoff double before Adam Doleac drew walk. With runners on the corners Travis Graves executed a perfect hit-and-run with a ground ball single through the right side of the infield to score Vollmuth.
Tyler Koelling singled down the right field line to score Doleac and a wild pitch allowed Graves to score the third run of the inning.
The Golden Eagles struck again in the bottom of the third as Kameron Brunty and Joey Archer led off the inning with walks. Vollmuth cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the right field wall to make the score 6-0.
Two batters later Travis Graves singled up the middle scoring Doleac and Mark Ellis for an 8-0 lead. Brunty rounded out the scoring in the third inning with a double to left-field scoring Graves.
The black and gold added a single run in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Koelling to score Ellis, who doubled earlier in the inning.
The fifth inning was much of the same as Marc Bourgeois and Taylor Walker drew walks to start the inning and Joey Archer blasted a three-run home run to make the score 13-0.
Vollmuth collected his third extra base hit of the game as he double just inside the third base bag and came around to score on Adam Doleac's two-run home run, giving Southern Miss a 15-0 lead.
Valley seemed to be out of the fifth inning but Paul Olson kicked a bases loaded ground ball off the bat of Taylor Walker allowing another run to score. Anthony Doss entered the game as a pinch hitter and roped the first pitch he saw into right-center for a two RBI single, putting Southern Miss on top 18-0.
The Devils finally cracked the scoreboard on relief pitcher Mandella Mingo in the top of the sixth inning with a RBI single by Luke Walker.
Southern Miss added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error and a RBI double by Doleac.
Southern Miss returns to action on Friday as they host LeMoyne College for a three game set.
