Baseball Drops Series Opener, 6-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team dropped the series opener to LeMoyne College, 6-2, in front of 3,138 fans at Pete Taylor Park Friday Night.
"I thought that (LeMoyne starter Jeff) Tardiff did a good job of mixing up his pitches," head coach Scott Berry said. "He had a good plan with us and we never adjusting to him.
"Hats off to LeMoyne to come into our place and play as well as they did tonight after the long travels and everything else they went through to get here. You have to show up to play every day, there is such a parity throughout college baseball that if you do not show up, you will get beat."
LeMoyne, who plays as a Division I independent, scored two runs in the top of the first and never relinquished their lead.
Southern Miss had their chances in the game, but could never get the big hit they needed, stranding 11 runners. While the Golden Eagles had only four hits in the game they drew 10 walks and was hit by a pitch as well.
Staff ace Todd McInnis worked 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out 10. After the first two frames McInnis settled down and allowed only three hits and a run.
Tardiff threw seven complete innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out five to pick up his second win of the season.
LeMoyne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Zach Wiley and a RBI single by Matt Marra.
Southern Miss begin to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Anthony Doss singled home B.A. Vollmuth, who was hit by a pitch in the head to start the inning. The Golden Eagles threatened for more but left the bases loaded to end the frame.
LeMoyne added another run on a RBI single by Wiley in the top of the seventh to make the score 3-1 and end the day for McInnis.
Reliever Cody Schlagel surrendered a three-run home run in the top of the eighth to Ryan Mahoney to make the score 6-1.
The Golden Eagles attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth as Dolphin reliever Tom McDermott walked three straight hitters to load the bases with one out, but an Adam Doleac RBI fielders choice was the only run the black and gold score.
The two teams will meet tomorrow with Scott Copeland toeing the rubber for Southern Miss. First pitch is set for 3:00 with the first 100 fans through the gates receiving a free Pete Taylor Park mini-bat.
