HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The 2012 Southern Miss baseball class added two additional prep players announced by head coach Scott Berry today.
The size of the 2012 is adding up quickly, literally. Berry added today two right-handed pitchers in six-foot-five Cody Carroll and six-foot-four Taylor Nunez, bringing the 2012 class to nine players thus far, eight of which are prep players.
"This class is shaping up to be a very good group of players," head coach Scott Berry said. "Both of these players we added today are big and tall that throw with a downhill motion which could help us on the mound once they arrive on campus. We are continuing to add depth to our pitching staff that we can build upon for seasons to come."
Carroll is out of Mt. Juliet HS in Tennessee where he helped lead his team to a 37-8 record and a No.3 ranking in the state last season for coach Mark Purvis. He was 4-1 with 40 strikeouts in 33 innings as a junior. In his sophomore campaign he was 4-4 with a 3.70 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 39 innings helping his team capture state-runner up in Tennessee.
Nunez prepped at Salmen HS on Slidell, La. where he was an all-district selection as a junior for coach Bill Morris. On the season he was 5-3 with a 1.9 ERA, allowing only 15 earned runs in 55.1 innings.
Nunez pitched in the USA Perfect Game WWBA Tournament this summer in Jupiter, Florida where his performance stood out to both Baseball America and Perfect Game.
These two big pitchers join previously announced players: Conner Barron (INF, Sumrall, Miss./ Sumrall HS), Ryan Ellis (1B/OF, Columbia, Miss./ Columbia HS), Breck Kline (INF, Slidell, La./ Northshore HS), Nick Johnson (RHP, Ridgeland Miss./RidgeLand HS), Luke Lowery (LHP, Sumrall, Miss./ Sumrall HS), Andrew Pierce (RHP, Jones County JC/ Stringer, Miss.) and Mason Robbins (OF/LHP, Leaksville, Miss/ George County HS).
