Memphis, Tenn. - Sophomore Vicky Correa parred the second hole of a playoff to defeat Mississippi State's Erika Thornton and win the Memphis Women's Invitational, played at the par-71, 6,176-yard Ridgeway Country Club.
The second round, which was suspended yesterday due to darkness, was concluded this morning. The final round, which was scheduled to take place today, was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Buenos Aires, Argentina native rallied from five shots back in the final round, firing a career-best 71 to finish five-over par. Her 36-hole score of 147 was also a career-best, and her 71 tied the fifth-lowest round all-time at Southern Miss.
"I'm so proud of Vicky and her first collegiate victory," said head coach Julie Gallup. "She has been putting in a lot of hard work on her golf swing and her short game, and it really paid off. She played great. She was very consistent and didn't miss any greens. She was able to get it up-and-down with reasonable ease."
Correa, who's previous best finish was a tie for 21st at last year's USA Lady Jaguar Invitational, became the first Lady Eagle to win a tournament since Mia Davidsson won the 2004 Lady Eagle Invitational.
"I felt more comfortable with the course in the second round," said Correa. "I knew all the holes better and where to put the ball. I learned from my mistakes from the first round. My short game was very good. I wasn't nervous in the playoff. I was just able to play my game."
As a team, the Southern Miss women's golf squad took sixth-place, 62-over par for a 36-hole score of 630 (318-312).
Freshman Brandi Rodriguez earned her third straight top 20 finish, carding a final round 76 to finish 12-over par in a tie for 12th-place.
Freshman Kelsey Gibson, playing as an individual, shot a final round 79, finishing 14-over par in a tie for 19th-place. It is her first career top 20 finish.
Junior Sandra Sohlberg tied for 37th-place at 19-over par.Redshirt freshman Lauren Judson, competing in the team competition for the first time in her career, finished 26-over par in a tie for 62nd-place, and junior Joyce Martinez, seeing her first career action, tied for 71st-place at 28-over.
Illinois won the team competition at 47-over par, six shots ahead of second-place Memphis and Missouri State.
The Lady Eagles conclude their fall season next week, Nov. 1-2, when they travel to Gulf Shores, Ala. for the UAB Fall Beach Bash.
