HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball program received a huge boost for the 2010 season as three of their signees have elected to enroll in school rather that turn professional.
Freshmen Geoffrey Thomas and Chase Fowler along with junior college transfer Marc Bourgeois were all selected in June's Major League Baseball free agent draft but will don the black and gold next season for Southern Miss.
"We are excited that these three players have decided to postpone their professional careers and further their education," head coach Scott Berry said.
"It is not an easy decision to make for anyone, but I think it is a credit it to our program and the experience of playing division one baseball at a major university along with the value of a college education."
All three players are on campus in preparation for the fall semester which begins tomorrow (Wednesday).
Thomas, a RHP from Stone Mountain, Georgia was selected in the 12th round by the Houston Astros.
Fowler, a catcher from out of Cumming, Ga. was taken in the 16th round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Bourgeois, a outfielder from Chipola Junior College was drafted in the 42nd round by the Minnesota Twins.
The Golden Eagles lost signee Patrick Corbin just days after the draft as the Los Angeles Angels second round pick.
