HATTIESBURG, Miss. - On a rainy afternoon in Hattiesburg, Southern Miss and Tulane were only able to play five innings before the game was called on account of the weather with Tulane getting the 8-4 victory.
"This has been a roller coaster of a week that is for sure, between the big win over Ole Miss, my retirement, the loss Friday and the come from behind win yesterday, that has been a lot of ups and downs in one week," head coach Corky Palmer said. "The weather today was a lot like that where we could play then had to wait, then able to play again but dealing with the elements is part of the game."
Tulane jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings before the rains came and delayed the game just over an hour. After the first delay Southern Miss came out swinging posting a four run bottom of the third inning to make the score 5-4 after three. However Tulane added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the rain shortened game.
"We could not get starting pitching once again today, Todd (McInnis) tried to go but he couldn't make it, so we had to go into our bullpen very early," Palmer added.
Golden Eagle starting pitcher Todd McInnis faced only five Tulane hitters in the top of the first inning before re-aggravating his hip flexor which he tweaked last weekend at East Carolina. He left the game surrendering two runs on three hits.
Moses Munoz, Jonathan Johnston and Wade Weathers worked the final 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
Taylor Walker led the Golden Eagles at the plate with a three-for-three afternoon, including a double and a run scored. Corey Stevens hit his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third.
For the third consecutive game Tulane score in their first at bat, today it was a two-run home run by Sam Honeck that put the Wave on top before the Golden Eagles came to the plate.
Drew Allain added the third run of the game for the wave to lead off the second inning with a solo shot to straight away center field off Moses Munoz, making the score 3-0.
Allain added another RBI with a two-out single in the third inning. The wave added another run in the third as Munoz caught Allain stealing but shortstop BA Vollmuth dropped the throw allowing Evan Mistich to score from third as the ball rolled into shallow right field.
After a rain delay that lasted an hour and five minutes the Golden Eagles finally came to the plate in the bottom of the third inning, and scored four runs. Taylor Walked started the rally with a double and James Ewing ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Walker.
Bo Davis followed with a hit-and-run infield single and Corey Stevens temporarily put Southern Miss within striking distance with his three-run home run to make the score 5-4.
Tulane answered with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before the rains game and the game was finally called after five innings.
Southern Miss will not play a mid-week game this week since the players will be taking final exams, the team returns to action on Friday in Memphis.
