HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A trio of current and former Southern Miss men's golfers have advanced in their bid to make the U.S. Open.
Current golfers Darren Chapman and Freddie Janneck, as well as former golfer Joel Myrick, advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier. Janneck won the Ruston, La., local qualifier at Squire Creek Country Club, shooting a 70, while Myrick shot a 72 for fourth-place. Chapman shot a 70 for second-place at Camp Creek Golf Club in Destin, Fla.
The three will now compete at the 36-hole Sectional Qualifiers on June 8. Chapman will participate in the Atlanta, Ga., Qualifier, Janneck will participate in the Memphis, Tenn., Qualifier, and Myrick will tee off at the Orland, Fla., Qualifier.
"It's a pretty big accomplishment, especially for me," said Myrick. "This is my fourth attempt at qualifying, and the first time that I've got past the first qualifier. Last year, I missed by one stroke, so I'm very pleased in advancing. I'm actually more excited that both Freddie and Darren advanced, because they are still at Southern Miss. We've got a good chance to have a Southern Miss golfer play in the U.S. Open."
