Baseball Falls to No. 11 Ole Miss, 8-4

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team could not get the big hit when they needed it as they fell to No. 11 Ole Miss 8-4 in front of 4,705 fans Wednesday evening at Pete Taylor Park.
"The better team won tonight, they out his us 18-7 and did a much better job at the plate," head coach Corky Palmer said. "I am still trying to get this team to play Southern Miss baseball, for some reason they have not caught on to that this season."
Ole Miss starting pitcher Brett Bukvich held the Golden Eagles hitless until the fifth inning when Southern Miss had their chance to get back into the game. Trailing five to zero the Eagles scored two runs and loaded the bases with no one out.
With the momentum starting to swing, The Rebels quickly ended the inning without allowing another runner to score on a double play and a pop up.
"I thought the whole game changed when we could not get a run in there. We had out chance to get the game back in the game but could not get the hit we needed," Palmer added.
Corey Stevens led the Golden Eagles at the plate with a two-for-three game including two RBI, a runs scored and a walk.
Southern Miss used six different pitchers, none of which went longer than two innings.
Ole Miss scored the games first run in the top of the second as Kyle Henson doubled down the left field line to score Zach Miller. Evan Button added the Rebels second run of the inning on a RBI single through the right side to score Henson.
Matt Smith added a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Rebels up 4-0 and end the day for starting pitcher Seth Hester.
Hester allowed four runs in two innings on seven hits while striking out two in his second loss of the season.
Ole Miss' Evan Button tripled to lead off the fourth inning and came around to score on a ground ball to put the Rebels up 5-0.
Southern Miss found their offense in the bottom of the fifth as Josh Fields singled to left field for the first Golden Eagle hit of the game right after James Ewing drew a walk to lead off the inning. The black and gold cracked the scoreboard as Corey Stevens ripped a two-RBI double off the right-center field wall to make the score 5-2.
Ole Miss extended their lead in the top of the seventh on RBI doubles by Zach Miller and Kevin Mort along with a RBI triple by Evan Button to make the score 8-2.
Southern Miss added two runs in the top of the seventh, the rally was started by Corey Stevens who singled to right field after a 12 pitch at bat and Adam Doleac followed with a pinch hit single up the middle.
Freshman BA Vollmuth picked up an RBI with a solid single up the middle and Taylor Walker drove in the second run of the inning on a soft groundout making the score 8-4.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend as they travel to East Carolina for a Conference USA series. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday which will be televised live on CBS College Sports.
