Southern Miss Defeats Valley 13-5 in Midweek Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss - Southern Miss jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to their 22nd consecutive victory over Mississippi Valley State with a 13-5 win Tuesday evening at Pete Taylor Park.
"Tonight was a good win for us, Valley is a much improved team this season that has shut down some quality opponents this year," head coach Corky Palmer said. "We did the job we had to tonight now we will move on to Ole Miss tomorrow."
Tyler Koelling led the Southern Miss offense with a four-for-five game including a double, run and RBI.
"I think Koelling is finally at 100% now health wise and his play lately is showing that," Palmer added. "He is starting to play like we knew he could when we signed him."
Seven different players had two hits for the black and gold tonight, in fact every starter who played more than four innings tallied a multiple hit game.
James Ewing added in three RBI and two runs scored to go along with his two hits.
Corey Stevens, Josh Fields and Kyle Maxie all had two RBI in addition to their two hits and Taylor Walker, Bo Davis and Joey Archer each scored two runs a piece plus their two hits.
Junior transfer Jeff Stanley picked up his first Golden Eagle victory, in his first start of the season, working six innings while allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two.
"I thought Stanley had his best outing since he has been here," Palmer added. "It was good to see him step up and pitch well tonight."
Jonathan Johnston worked two scoreless innings allowing only one hit in relief.
Matt Warren finished the game on the bump but not before surrendering three runs in his only inning of work.
Southern Miss (25-14) opened the scoring in the second inning as Corey Stevens delivered a two-RBI single down the left field line to score James Ewing and Joey Archer. Two batters later Tyler Koelling delivered a bases loaded single to score Stevens and give Southern Miss a 3-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the third inning as Joey Arched doubled down the left field line to score Bo Davis. Josh Fields then ripped his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to put Southern Miss up 6-0.
The Golden Eagles were at it again in the fourth inning as Tyler Koelling led the inning off with a double off the left-center field wall and hustled all the way around to score on Taylor Walker's bunt single. James Ewing doubled home walker to put Southern Miss up 8-0 and chase Valley starting pitcher Chris Mills from the game.
Valley (18-18) cracked the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning as Jeff Squier hit a two-run home run off Stanley, the only runs he would surrender in the game, to make the score 8-2.
James Ewing stroked a bases loaded single to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. BA Vollmuth added an RBI single and Kyle Maxie picked up two RBI with a bases loaded single up the middle to cap the scoring for Southern Miss.
Squier added his second home run of the game in the top of the ninth off Matt Warren, another two-run shot. to make the score 13-4. Warren allowed another run on a RBI single by Curtis Ford to make the score 13-5.
The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday as they host No. 11 Ole Miss, the game is the make up from the rain out on March 25th. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
