Baseball Drops Double Header to UAB

The Southern Miss baseball team dropped a double header to UAB, losing 11-5 in game one and 5-1 in the nightcap Saturday at Pete Taylor Park.
"Today was a tough day, we did not swing the bats very well," head coach Corky Palmer said. "Our starting pitching gave us a chance but we did not hit like we have all year in this series and we made a lot of mistakes."
Game one was close until UAB used an eight run eighth inning to pull away. James Ewing was three-for-four and Taylor Walker had two RBI.
Game two was dominated by UAB starting pitcher Kyle Robertson, who did not surrender a hit until the ninth inning, though Southern Miss had their chance in the final frame leaving the go ahead run in the batters box to end the game.

UAB 11, Southern Miss 5
Southern Miss struck for an unearned run in the bottom of the first as Taylor Walker reached on a fielding error by UAB first baseman Luke Stewart and came around to score on James Ewing's two-out RBI single.
UAB answered back in the top of the second with two unearned run on a sacrifice flies by Luke Stewart and Andrew Manning, to make the score 2-1.
UAB scored again in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Cody McMurry to make the score 3-1.
Southern Miss chipped into the Blazer lead as Tyler Koelling scored on Bo Davis' sacrifice fly making the score, 3-2.
UAB Broke the game open in the top of the eighth scoring eight runs on seven hits keyed by Allen Aubin's bases loaded double and two Southern Miss wild pitches.
Southern Miss made an attempt for a late rally in the ninth, scoring three runs on a James Ewing's sacrifice fly and Taylor Walker's two-RBI bases loaded double in the ninth inning.
Game Two Recap
UAB 4, Southern Miss 1
UAB struck for three runs in the top of the second inning, keyed by Andrew Manning's two-run home run and a RBI single by Allen Aubin.
The Blazers added an unearned run as Nick Crawford laid down a bunt with the bases loaded that Kyle Lindsey mishandled allowing a run to score and make the score 4-0.
Kyle Robertson flirted with a no-hitter, not allowing a Golden Eagle hit until Tyler Koelling doubled off the right field wall to lead off the ninth inning. Robertson left the game with the bases loaded and no one out.
UAB relief pitcher Nick Graffeo allowed a RBI single to James Ewing and struck out three Golden Eagle hitters looking to end the game.
Southern Miss returns to action on Tuesday as they host Mississippi Valley, first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
