Baseball Comes From Behind to Defeat UNO, 5-2

NEW ORLEANS - Southern Miss scored four runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat UNO 5-2 at Maestri Field in New Orleans Tuesday night.
"We received good pitching all night from McInnis, Schlagel and Cargill then two seniors got big hits for us late," head coach Corky Palmer said. "It was a tough game but a good road win for us tonight."
James Ewing led the Southern Miss offense tonight with two hits and three RBI with a run scored. Brian Dozier and Taylor Walker both picked up hits tonight to extend their hitting streaks. Dozier has hit safely in all 13 games this season while Walker has hit in the last 10 games.
Southern Miss (9-4) opened the scoring in the top of the first as Taylor Walker drilled the second pitch of the game down the left field line for a lead off double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games on the season. James Ewing delivered a two-out RBI single to score Walker and give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
UNO (5-8) tied the game in the bottom of the second as Blake Dory ripped RBI double to the left-center field wall to even the score at one.
The Privateers took a lead in the bottom of the third as Nick Schwaner hit a two-out solo home run down the right field line.
Todd McInnis worked 4.2 innings allowing five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out six.
Southern Miss finally found their offense in the top of the eighth inning after sending the minimum 15 hitters to the plate from the third through the seventh innings.
Travis Graves started the rally with a leadoff walk, Tyler Koelling sacrificed Graves to second and Kameron Brunty drew a two out walk. Brian Dozier singled down the left field line to score Graves and tie the game.
James Ewing picked up his third RBI of the game and gave Southern Miss the lead with a two RBI double to right center. Joey Archer plated Ewing with an RBI single through the right side to make the score 5-2 and cap the four run inning.
Cody Schlagel picked up his third win of the season, working 2.1 scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out five, including the first three hitters he faced.
Collin Cargill picked up the first save of the season for the Golden Eagles working two innings without allowing a run, in the eighth inning he only needed 10 pitches, nine of which were strikes to retire the side. In the ninth he allowed one hit and walked one but left the trying run at the plate to end the game.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend as they host Louisiana Tech for a three game weekend series. JR Ballinger (1-0, 2.19 ERA) will start Friday night on the mound for Southern Miss.
