HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball program added two additional players for the 2011 class, head coach Scott Berry announced today, bringing the total to six players already for 2011.
"I feel like we have added two more young players that can help us compete at the highest level of collegiate baseball," head coach Scott Berry said. "I like the way this class is taking shape and fell like we have a lot of young talent heading to Hattiesburg."
Boomer Scarborough (Pass Christian, Miss.) is a two-time class 4A all-state selection out of St. Stanislaus High School as a right-handed pitcher and first-baseman. As a junior last season, he hit .451 with nine home runs and 29 RBI and was 8-2 with a 0.92 ERA and 100 strikeouts on the mound. In his sophomore campaign he was 6-2 on the bump with a 1.24 ERA and 69 strikeouts.
On the mound the six-foot-two, 235 pound Scarborough can touch the low 90's with a hard curveball. He is also a middle linebacker for the St. Stanislaus football team which will play in the third round of the state playoff this week.
"Boomer is a big, strong and aggressive player," recruiting coordinator Chad Caillet said. "We are looking for an immediate impact on the mound from him. He has the mentality to be a closer and the body and arm-strength to be a starter."
Michael Sterling (Meridian, Miss.) is a 5A all-division player for Meridian High School who hit .360 last season as a junior. The five-foot-eleven, 165 pound infielder plays 2B, SS and 3B in high school but projects to play shortstop at Southern Miss.
"Sterling is a very scrappy, athletic player who plays the game the right way," Caillet added. "He is a great leadoff hitter, a contact hitter who has the ability to take a base and does not strike out very often. He is also a tremendous defender,"
With Scarborough and Sterling the 2011 class currently includes six players. The other four are junior college players Ashley Graeter (INF/RHP - Pearl River CC) and Matt Shaw (RHP -Northwest CC) along with prep athletes Joe Martin (OF - Zachary, La.) and a Josh Rogers (LHP- Jackson, Miss).
