South Alabama Defeats Southern Miss 16-5

MOBILE, Ala. - - South Alabama avenged a 4-2 loss in the opening months of the season with a 16-5 victory over Southern Miss at Stanky Field in Mobile Tuesday night.
The Jags pounded out 12 hits and used four Southern Miss errors to score 16 runs in the seven inning contest.
Southern Miss threw three freshman pitchers in the game that struggled to get the South Alabama hitters out. Collin Cargill started his first career game and threw only one inning allowing four earned runs. Houston Brown worked 1.1 innings in relief allowing six runs, five earned and Seth Hester worked 1.2 innings allowing six runs, though only one was earned.
For the fourth consecutive game Southern Miss jumped out on top with runs in the first inning. Bo Davis legged out an infield single to lead off the game and Brian Dozier blasted a two-run home run into the scoreboard over the left center field wall for an early 2-0 lead.
South Alabama answered right back in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own on a RBI double by Ryne Jernigan and a RBI single by Tyan Bohanan.
Southern Miss struck again in the top of the second after a Trey Cuevas walked and a Corey Stevens singled to left field to start the rally. Bo Davis laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Chris LaGrow was called for a balk to score Cuevas from third and Brian Dozier drilled his second home of the game to put Southern Miss on top 5-2.
The Jaguars rallied right back in the bottom of the third to tie the game at five on a Jernigan three run home run.
South Alabama broke the game wide open with a six run third inning aided by two Southern Miss errors. Jake Overstreet and Jernigan both had a two RBI hits in the inning.
Southern Miss continued to help the Jags rally as the Golden Eagles committed two more errors in the bottom of the fourth leading to four South Alabama runs in the frame.
South added a single run in the fifth on a Bunky Keaton solo home run to make the score 16-5. Southern Miss will return to action this Thursday for the final regular season series at UAB.
