Baseball Takes Game Two Over Memphis 12-6

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss came out swinging the bats for the second consecutive game putting up 12 runs on 11 hits in a 12-6 victory over Memphis at Pete Taylor Park Sunday afternoon.
3,305 fans watched the Golden Eagles at "The Pete" Saturday afternoon eclipsing the 100,000 fan mark this season. 2008 marks the fourth consecutive year that at over 100,000 fans have enjoyed Southern Miss baseball at Pete Taylor Park.
Bo Davis led the Southern Miss (36-15, 13-7 CUSA) offensive attack with three hits, including a double, scoring two runs and driving home two runs. Trey Cuevas collected two hits, one of which was a two-run home run to straight away centerfield, with four RBI and two runs scored.
Brian Dozier and James Ewing each had two hits a piece as well, both of which extended their hitting steaks to 12 games. Ewing has had six straight games with multiple hits.
Collin Cargill improved to 5-0 on the season picking up the win in relief of starter Josh Billeaud. Wade Weathers earned his second save of the year, working 3.2 innings without allowing a run to finish the game.
For the second straight game Southern Miss struck early and often, scoring six runs in the top of the first before the Tigers could record an out. Bo Davis led off the bottom of the first with a walk and Brian Dozier singled to left field. James Ewing ripped and RBI single to left field and Memphis outfielder Tyler Huelsing over ran the ball allowing Dozier to scamper home and Ewing to advance to third. Trey Sutton was hit in the helmet with the next pitch and Drew Carson singled up the middle to score Ewing from third for a 3-0 lead.
Trey Cuevas ripped a double to right-center field scoring Sutton and Carson for a 5-0 advantage. Chris Matesich followed with a deep fly ball to right field that Memphis outfielder Chris Newsome dropped ending the day for Memphis starter Branch Davis before recording an out.
Keith Winstead greeted new pitcher Ryan Holland with a single to right field scoring Cuevas from third. The ninth hitter of the inning Corey Stevens flied out for the first out in the frame but not before Southern Miss had scored six runs on two Memphis pitchers throwing 26 pitches. Bo Davis capped the scoring in the first inning with a seeing-eye single through the hole on the left side to score Matesich for a 7-0 lead at the end of one inning.
The Golden Eagles continued the scoring in the bottom of the second as Trey Sutton walked and Trey Cuevas blasted his fifth home run of the season deep over the center field wall for a 9-0 lead.
Memphis cut into the Golden eagle lead in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by first baseman Trey Wiedman and a bases loaded walk to force home the second run of the inning making the score 9-2.
Southern Miss pitchers helped the Memphis cause again as Josh Billeuad walked the leadoff hitter and hit Weidman to end his afternoon. Collin Cargill entered the game and walked the first hitter he faced to load the bases before Cole Shelton delivered an RBI single and KK Chalmers picked up an RBI on a fielders choice to make the score 9-4.
The Golden Eagles added a single run in the bottom of fifth inning and Keith Winstead drew a walk and came around to score on Bo Davis' RBI double to center field.
Memphis added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on RBI singles by Brett Bowen and Robby Graham to make the score 10-6.
Southern Miss scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning on three consecutive singles starting with a bunt single by Bo Davis and followed by Brian Dozier single to left center. James Ewing picked up another RBI on a solid single up the middle before Trey Sutton reached on a throwing error to load the bases.
New Memphis pitcher Chris Kirkland surrendered a sacrifice fly hit by Drew Carson to score Dozier from third making the score 12-6.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the final game of the series and final scheduled game at home this season, first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park.
