PDF BOX SCORE: RICE AT SOUTHERN MISS
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss soccer team fell 4-0 to Conference USA-rival Rice on Sunday, falling to 5-10-1 overall and 1-7-0 in league play.
"We competed hard today, but give a lot of credit to Rice," coach Scott Ebke said. "They came in very well organized and I thought we did a good job of shutting down their midfield for moments of the game, but they did a really good job of moving the ball around, creating chances and finishing their chances."
Rice (9-6-0, 5-3-0 C-USA) had four different Owls score a goal on the afternoon.
Freshman Hope Ward put the Owls on top 1-0 with her first goal of the season on a give-and-go just inside the 18 with the assist from Erin Scott during the 17-minute mark. Junior Alexa Coralli found the back of the net for her first goal of the season as well when she headed a ball from inside the keeper's box off a corner by Ward in the 32nd minute. Rice took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Shelley Wong gave put Rice up 3-0 when she put the ball in the back of the net inside the 18 after a cross from the left side from Ward in the 61st-minute.
Scott scored the final goal for the Owls in the 79th-minute when she lofted a ball from the left wing to the right side netting out of the reach of goal keeper Holly Cox. Kellen Schugart assisted on the play.
"From an offensive stand point, we created a lot of chances," said Ebke. "Eleven corner kicks showed that we believed in our attack. Their keeper and their team came up with some huge saves off some of those. That's the way it goes in some games. We look to rebound for another tough weekend."
Southern Miss outshot the Rice 13-11 and had 11 corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles remain at home to face Tulsa at 3 p.m., Friday, at Soccer Complex before hitting the road to face SMU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
