HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team will host the second fall exhibition in as many weeks Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park against visiting Nicholls State. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
The Golden Eagles defeated cross-town William Carey 10-0 last Sunday afternoon as 10 members of the new squad saw their first action at Pete Taylor Park. Much of the same can be anticipated again this Sunday as Coach Corky Palmer continues to evaluate his 16 new faces this season.
"We are just trying to take a look at everyone and see where they best fit into our program," Palmer said. "It is nice to have options and depth at different position which we did not have much of last year."
After successful careers thus far the middle of the diamond will be locked up by returning seniors in Brian Dozier (SS), James Ewing (2B) and Bo Davis (CF).
Junior College transfer Joey Archer has secured himself at first base and Travis Graves will be in the catching rotation with along with junior Kyle Maxie.
There is still competition at third base and the corner outfield spots as to who will get the starting nod on February 20th when the Golden Eagles open their 2009 season.
On the mound look for as many as seven or eight different players to throw at least an inning Sunday afternoon.
This will be the final exhibition against another institution this fall. The Golden Eagles will conclude their final week of fall workouts next Sunday with the annual `Black and Gold Game.'
