Volleyball Knocks Off Memphis In Four Sets, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team knocked off Memphis in Conference USA volleyball action, 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21), snapping a seven-match losing streak to the Tigers, dating back to the 2003 season.
Southern Miss improves to 13-7 overall and 3-4 in league play, while Memphis drops to 12-9, 3-4.
Angela Hlavaty paced the Golden Eagles with a match-high 17 kills followed by Sarah Jane Bowden with 14 and Lauren Sears added 11. Maia Ivanova recorded her fourth match with 20 or more digs. Kelsey Seymour had 47 assists to go with 14 digs. Hlavaty also added 10 digs.
Emily Underwood led the Tigers with 12 and Rebekah Strickland chipped in 10 kills. Christine Bach tallied a match-high 24 digs.
Southern Miss took the opening set 25-19 using a strong offensive attack performance, hitting .412. Memphis, then, tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 win.
Following the intermission, the both teams battled back and forth using long rallies. Neither team managed more than a three-point advantage. The set featured 11 ties and four lead changes. Southern Miss held on for the 25-23 win.
Memphis opened the fourth set with a 3-0 lead, before Southern Miss ran off four straight points to take a 4-3 lead. With the score tied at 8-8, the Golden Eagles were able to put together 4-0 run, pushing their lead to 12-8. From there, Southern Miss was able to maintain the lead, finishing the set with a 25-21 win.
Southern Miss now hits the road for four-straight matches, beginning at Rice and Houston, Oct. 17 and 19.
