Volleyball Falls to Rice, 3-0

HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Miss volleyball team lost to Rice in three sets, 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-20), falling to 13-8 and 3-5 in Conference USA play.
Angela Hlavaty and Lauren Sears tallied five kills apiece, while Maia Ivanova had nine digs.
Rice (14-4, 5-2) placed two players in double-digit kills, led by Karyn Morgan and Ashleigh McCord with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Morgan also led the Owls with 14 digs.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start in the first two sets as the Owls took advantage of a poor hitting performance for a 25-16 and 26-12 win.
Both teams battled back and forth through the third set. With the set knotted at 16-16, Rice scored three-straight points, pushing its lead to 19-16. From there, the Owls were able to maintain the lead and closed out the set for a 25-20 win. The Owls finished the match, out hitting Southern Miss, .369 to .100.
Southern Miss returns to action Saturday, when the Golden Eagles take on the Houston Cougars.
