HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior forward Sarah McFadden (Magherafelt, Northern Ireland) led the Lady Eagle offensive unit with two goals in the 2-0 preseason victory over Louisiana Tech, today, at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Eleven minutes into the match, McFadden beat Tech goalkeeper Tara Gavlak to put Southern Miss on top 1-0. Twenty-eight minutes later, McFadden was tripped while on attack in front of the goal and netted a penalty kick to expand the lead, 2-0.
"It was a wet day, so we couldn't play the soccer that we wanted to," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "Overall, I'm very pleased with the performance and the effort from the entire team. I think one of the positive things was that all of the girls got in a lot of playing time. We have 10 freshmen, and they all contributed today. That's going to be one of the keys to our success this year."
The Lady Eagles dominated the shot chart throughout the entire match. At the conclusion, Southern Miss was credited with 13 shots, including six on goal, compared to Tech's five.
McFadden tallied four shots, all on goal, while sophomore Keilah Hopkins (Irving, Texas) and freshman Leigh-Ann Levens (Long Beach, Miss.) recorded two shots each. Senior Megan Kolts (Suwannee, Ga.), sophomore Daniela Picado (Meridian, Miss.) and freshmen Keli Theiss (Springdale, Ark.), Paigelee Hodges (Hayward, Calif.) and Amy Skeet (Lewisville, Texas) each recorded one shot.
Junior goalkeepers Holly Cox (London, England) and Christina Duvall (Pascagoula, Miss.) split time in the net, with Cox receiving the starting nod. Cox finished the match with two saves, as Duvall wasn't faced with any shots on goal.
"I thought that it was a nice start to our season," junior midfielder Erin Hamrick said. "The freshmen really came out and showed what they could do."
Southern Miss officially kicks off the 2007 season next weekend, participating in LSU's Tiger Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
