HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's golf team held its inaugural Meet the Eagles, today, at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
The event began at 3 p.m. with a shotgun start, allowing members of the Southern Miss Golden Tee Club to play nine holes of golf with the team.
The friendly competition was concluded with a reception that included the team and their parents, Southern Miss Athletics Director Richard Giannini and the participating members of the Golden Tee Club.
Opening the social hour, both Giannini and Head Coach Jerry Weeks expressed their excitement and anticipation of the 2007-08 season, returning all but one member of last year's squad.
"I look forward to seeing the success of the men's golf program this year after finishing third in Conference USA last season, the highest our men's team has ever finished," Giannini said. "It's an exciting time to be a part of Southern Miss Athletics and the men's golf program."
At the reception, Dr. Paul Apyan, the father of team member Paul Apyan, donated a customized van for the travel of the men's golf program.
"We've always liked to be involved and supportive in the things that our children do," Dr. Apyan said. "I asked coach Weeks what we could do to help the golf team, and we came up with this idea which means no more rental vans for them. They can travel comfortably, feel better about themselves and play well. When you get involved with a program, you're only there for three or four years. At the end of that time, you want to think to yourself `what did I do to make it better.' My wife (Laura) and I have been very fortunate to have been able to do this."
