OXFORD, Miss. - Lance Lynn threw a complete-game two-hit shutout to lead Ole Miss to a 4-0 NCAA Regional victory over Southern Miss here Saturday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The Golden Eagles (39-22) will return to action Sunday in a 1 p.m. elimination game against Sam Houston State, who defeated Troy, 5-4, earlier in the day.
Lynn, who overcame some early wildness, held the Golden Eagles hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings before Michael Ewing and Luke Adkins delivered consecutive singles in the sixth. The rally was short-lived as James Ewing lined out into a double play to end the threat.
The righthander improved to 8-4 on the year as he fanned seven and walked five in the contest for his fourth complete game of the season. Four of Lynn's walks came in the first two frames, including three in the second inning, but Southern Miss' Bo Davis struckout to end the inning.
The Rebels (39-23) scored solo runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings.
Cody Overbeck got the Rebels on the board in the first with a run-scoring single and Justin Henry added a sacrifice fly in the third.
Jordan Henry, who tallied four of Ole Miss' 11 hits, added an RBI double in the fourth, scoring Logan Power who doubled to open the frame. The Rebels then completed their scoring with a bases-loaded ground out from Zach Miller in the sixth.
Barry Bowden (7-5) suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles as he allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings of work. Tyler Conn threw three shutout innings of relief for the Golden Eagles, walking two and striking out two.
The Golden Eagles were shutout for the second time this season -- the other time coming March 3 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Sam Houston State game will be carried live on the Southern Miss/ISP Sports Network. There will also be a webstream of the game through SouthernMiss.com.
