Mississippi State Wins Game One of Midweek Series, 11-2

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's offense scored 11 runs, banged out 15 hits and its pitchers struck out 14 Southern Miss batters en route to an 11-2 win over Southern Miss, tonight, at Dudy-Noble Field in front of 6,361 in attendance.
Whitney (5-1) earned his fifth win of the season, pitching a season-high six innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking three and striking out a season-high eight batters. John Lalor (2) earned his second save of the season, giving up one run on three hits, walking two and striking out six batters.
Golden Eagle starter Jared Cavenaugh (2-1) was credited with his first loss of the season. He pitched three innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and walking one batter.
Mississippi State (26-10) scored 11 runs on 15 hits, while Southern Miss (25-17) scored two runs on seven hits.
The Bulldogs were led by Connor Powers, who finished with three hits, including a double, three runs scored and three RBIs, and Jet Butler, who finished with three hits, including a two-run homer, three runs scored and two RBIs. Brandon Turner, Mitch Moreland and Joseph McCaskill each had two hits. Moreland finished with two RBIs as well.
The Golden Eagles were led offensively by Trey Sutton, who finished with two hits, including a double and an RBI. Keith Winstead had a hit and an RBI.
Mississippi State struck early scoring three runs in the first inning to take the early 3-0 lead. Jeffrey Rea walked, advanced to third on Brandon Turner's single through the right side and scored when Edward Easley reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third base. Moreland singled through the left side and McCaskill reached on an infield single to third base to load the bases. Powers singled through the left side to drive in Easley, and Mark Goforth reached on a fielder's choice grounder to second base to plate Moreland for the third run of the inning.
Southern Miss answered with one in the top of the second inning to cut the State lead to 3-1. Michael Ewing reached on a fielder's choice grounder to first base, moved to second on a Tyler Whitney balk and scored on Winstead's single to center field.
Mississippi State scored a run in the second inning to build its lead to 4-1. Butler singled to left center, moved to second on Rea's single up the middle, advanced to third on Turner's ground out to second and scored on Moreland's fielder's choice grounder to first base.
The Bulldogs added another run in the third inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Powers led off the inning with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on GoForth's bunt single down the third base line and scored on Andy Rice's sacrifice fly to left field.
Mississippi State added two more runs in the fifth inning to run its lead to 7-1. Rice reached on a two-out walk before Butler hit a two-run homer over right field.
A two-run single up the middle by Powers gave added two more runs to the Bulldog lead, 9-1. Moreland reached on a one-out walk, and McCaskill doubled to left center to put runners on second and third before Powers cleared the bases.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 11-1 in the seventh inning, adding another two runs. Butler hit a ground-rule double to right center to lead off the inning, moved to third on Rea's ground out to short and scored on a passed ball by Chance Harst. Turner walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to right center by Moreland.
Southern Miss scored a run in the ninth inning to provide the final outcome, 11-1. Harst reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Sutton's single to left field.
Southern Miss and Mississippi State play the second game of the two-game midweek series on Wednesday, April 25, at Dudy-Noble Field at 6:30 p.m.
