HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss freshman Samantha Holt (Pensacola, Fla.) compiled a two-round score of 147, including an even-par 71 in the opening round, to hold fifth place after 36 holes here, Monday, at the Lady Eagle Classic being played at the 6,031-yard Canebrake Country Club.
Holt added a 76 during the second round of the day to rank as one of four Lady Eagles in the Top 20 after the first day. Freshman Rebecka Nilsson (Laholm, Sweden) and sophomore Heather Golden (Biloxi, Miss.) are next at 151 - both tied for 13th. Nilsson tallied rounds of 76 and 75, while Golden notched a 78 and 73 as she is playing as an individual in the event.
Freshman Clara Viladomiu (Barcelona, Spain) fired rounds of 77 and 75 to hold a 17th-place tie with a 152, while junior Jennifer Bodemann (Palm City, Fla.) sits in 31st with a 164, after shooting rounds of 86 and 78. Junior Helena Backlund (Bollegygd, Sweden), playing as an individual shot an 80 and 88 to post a 168 and a 36th place, while sophomore Kate Burns (Leesburg, Va.) notched a 87 and 88 for a 175 and 38th place.
In a day that saw just three rounds of below par and five more at even par, Taryn Durham of Middle Tennessee followed a first round of 74 with the low round of the day, a four-under 67, to lead the individuals with a one-under 141. Durham is one stroke ahead of Sarah Nicholson of West Florida, who shot a pair of 71s.
UWF also leads the team portion of the competition with a two-round score of 590, followed by Middle Tennessee (595), UAB (596), South Alabama (604) Southern Miss (310-304=614), Troy (620), Samford (643) and Jackson State (660).
The tournament concludes, Tuesday, with its final 18 holes. The final round begins with a shotgun start at 8 p.m. Admission is free for the event.
