HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss freshman Rebecka Nilsson led three other teammates in the Top 20 by firing a final-round, even-par 71 to capture a sixth-place tie in the Lady Eagle Classic at Canebrake Country Club, Tuesday. The Lady Eagles fired a final-round team score of 305 to finish at 919 and in fifth place.
Nilsson, from Laholm, Sweden, completed the tournament with a stroke total of 222. She bested freshman teammate Samantha Holt (Pensacola, Fla.) by four total strokes, who was next for the Lady Eagles by shooting a final-round 79 to end the tournament at 226 and a 12th-place tie.
Both Clara Viladomiu, a freshman from Barcelona, Spain, and Heather Golden, a sophomore from Biloxi, Miss., ended the event tied for 19th-place at 231 total strokes. Viladomiu shot a 79 over her final round, while Golden - who was playing as an individual - notched an 80 over her last 18 holes.
Junior Jennifer Bodemann (Palm City, Fla.) shot her low round of the tournament, a 76, to finish at 240 and a 27th-place tie, while junior Helena Backlund (Bollegygd, Sweden), also playing as an individual, notched an 89 over her final round to end with a 257 and 37th place. Sophomore Kate Burns rounded out the Lady Eagle finishers with an 84 over the last 18 holes to complete the event at 259 strokes and 38th place.
UAB, which broke the 600-stroke barrier after two rounds and 900 after three rounds for the first time this season, won the team title by shooting a final-round 303 and end the event at 899, beating Middle Tennessee (305-900) by one stroke.
Katelyn Stanier, who shot the lone under-par round of 67, was able to end regulation tied with Sarah Nicholson of West Florida at 218 and force a playoff. It took two holes, by Stanier won the second hole to capture the individual medalist honor.
West Florida finished third in the field (314-904), followed by South Alabama (304-908), Southern Miss, Troy (306-926), Samford (311-954) and Jackson State (322-982).
The Lady Eagles conclude their regular season, April 23-25, at the Conference USA Championship in Birmingham, Ala., at Limestone Springs.
