DOTHAN, Ala. - Troy scored all of its runs in the third inning to send Southern Miss to its first loss of the season, 3-2, in the finale of the Wiregrass Classic here Sunday afternoon in front of 1,120 at Northcutt Field.
Southern Miss (7-1) tallied six hits in the contest, including three from James Ewing, who also drove home both of the Golden Eagles' runs.
The Trojans (8-3) finished the tournament undefeated as Brett Pierce led their seven-hit attack with three safeties.
Troy got two of those hits via singles by Brett Henry and Shohei Fujita to open the third, before Ian Craze reached on a sacrifice bunt in which a play could not be made to load the bases.
A balk from Golden Eagle starter David Clark gave the Trojans their first run and Clint Robinson followed by driving home a run on a groundout, before Josh Dew ended the home squad's scoring with an RBI single of his own through the left side.
Clark, a redshirt junior from Columbia, Miss., recorded six strong innings and allowed all three runs on six hits and two walks to go along with eight strikeouts over six innings to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Golden Eagles started their comeback in the fourth as Ewing tallied his first home run of the season to leftfield to open the frame.
Again, it was Ewing who got Southern Miss on the board one inning later with an infield single. After an out, Chance Harst was hit by a pitch and went to second on a Brian Dozier single. After a wild pitch to move each runner up a base, Ewing's grounder to the left side of the infield was enough to get Harst home.
Southern Miss then had their chances to tie the game later in the contest. The Golden Eagles had a runner at third in both the eighth and ninth frames, but could not advance them into score.
Trojan starter Jeff Green (1-0) surrendered two runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts over five innings to post the victory. Josh Dew gave up no runs and allowed a pair of hits and a walk with two punchouts over the final two innings to record his second save of the campaign.
The Golden Eagles return to action, Wednesday, when they travel to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m., and can be heard on the Southern Miss/ISP Sports Network.
