SMU Hands Southern Miss Volleyball Team a 3-1 Loss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - SMU out hit Southern Miss .219 to .146 and recorded 68 kills to 56, defeating the Lady Eagles, 3-1, in Conference USA volleyball action Friday night in Reed Green Coliseum.
Morgan Johnson paced the Eagles (10-13, 1-6) with 17 kills, followed by Stevi Cheri with 14 and Angela Hlavaty added 10. Maia Ivanova led the team with 17 digs, with Amy Flarity and Jillian Neave adding 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Johnson also tallied seven blocks.
Kathryn Wilkerson led all players with a match-high 26 kills, while Caitlin Rainbird added 18 kills and 23 digs for the Mustangs (13-8, 3-4). Natalie Peters also had double-digit kills with 13. Carly Bergquist recorded 23 digs and Madison Hill chipped in 11 digs.
Game one featured six ties and three lead changes. SMU built a six-point lead, but Southern Miss was able to cut the lead to one, 24-23, using a 12-7 run. The Mustang held on for the 32-30 win.
Game two was all SMU, as the Mustangs finished the game with a .441 attack percentage, committing only two attack errors. SMU won game two, 30-16.
After the intermission, game three started much like game one. Both teams battled early on. There were seven ties and three lead changes. With the game knotted 9-9, the Eagles scored five straight points, taking a 14-9 nine lead. SMU fought back to tie the game at 16-16. Southern Miss went on to win 30-25.
SMU came out strong in game four, jumping out to a 20-11 lead. Southern Miss couldn't get its offense in gear, losing 30-19.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, hosting Tulsa in a 1 p.m., match.
