HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A season-opening weekend home tournament, a three-game home series with league foes Rice and Tulane, a non-conference three-game home set with Louisiana-Lafayette, as well as a road series at LSU highlight the 2007 Southern Miss baseball schedule released Monday.
It features eight NCAA Tournament teams from last year (Alabama, Houston, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Rice, South Alabama, Troy and Tulane), three Super Regional teams (Alabama, Ole Miss, Rice) and one College World Series team (Rice).
"We're excited about our schedule for the 2007 season," said ninth-year Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer. "We always try to play the best competition that will not only challenge our club, but also prepare us for Conference USA competition. The conference continues to be one of the best in the nation, after sending four teams to the NCAA tournament last year."
The Golden Eagles play 30 home games for the 2007 season including the first three in the Coca-Cola Classic at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The season-opening game will come against Southern Illinois (Feb. 16), followed by Louisville (Feb. 17) and Northwestern State (Feb. 18) to complete play in the Coca-Cola Classic.
Also part of the Golden Eagle home schedule are three game series against non-conference foes Louisiana-Lafayette (March 2-4), Kent State (March 16-18) and Dallas Baptist (May 12-13). Southern Miss will also play host to Rice (March 23-25), Tulane (Apr. 13-15) UAB (April 20-22) and Marshall (May 4-6).
Southern Miss will also play South Alabama (Feb. 20), New Orleans (Feb. 21), Southeastern Louisiana (Mar. 13), Nicholls State (Apr. 3) Ole Miss (Apr. 11) and Louisiana-Monroe (Apr. 18) in home mid-week single games.
Three of the Golden Eagles' 56-game slate will be played at Trustmark Park - the Double A home of the Atlanta Braves - in Jackson, which includes Alabama (Mar. 6), Louisiana-Monore (Mar. 20) and Ole Miss (Mar. 27).
The Golden Eagles open the road portion of their schedule with a tournament in Dothan, Ala., where they will play Georgia Southern (Feb. 23), Indiana (Feb. 24) and host Troy (Feb. 25).
Southern Miss also has its three-game series at LSU (Mar. 9-11), along with sets at league foes Memphis (March 30-April 1), UCF (April 6-8), East Carolina (April 27-29) and Houston (May 17-19).
Other road tilts include single games at Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 25), South Alabama (Feb. 28) and New Orleans (May 15), along with a pair of games in Starkville against Mississippi State (April 24-25).
The Golden Eagles will then head to the Conference USA Tournament which is slated for Zephyr Field in Metairie, La., May 23-27.
The Golden Eagles return 17 letterwinners, including five starting position players, two starting pitchers, and six bullpen pitchers from last year's squad that finished 39-23 overall and tied for fourth-place in Conference USA and advanced to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles have produced a 172-79 record over the past four years for a 68.5 winning percentage.
Southern Miss opens its 2007 season at home hosting the Coca-Cola Classic on Feb. 16-18. Louisville, Northwestern (La.) State and Southern Illinois join the Golden Eagles to complete the field for the classic.
