BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- - UAB connected on 7-of-8 free throws in the last 27 seconds, defeating Southern Miss 73-70 in Conference USA action Friday night in Bartow Arena.
With the loss, Southern Miss had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-11 and 5-3 in C-USA, while UAB improved to 10-8 and 3-4.
"We played like a road team tonight," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "We totally lost our composure down the stretch and we panic. But, you have to give UAB credit for this win. They sat down two of their top players and the rest of their team stepped up for them."
With the Lady Eagles leading, 62-53, with 3:50 remaining in the game, UAB used a 14-2 run over 2:46 to take its first lead of the game, 67-64, with 47 seconds remaining. During that span, Southern Miss had five costly turnovers and one missed three-pointer and one made basket.
Southern Miss cut the lead back to one, 67-66, but UAB was able to convert from the free throw line, building a five point lead.
"Our offensive flow was not there in the last three minutes of the game," McNelis said. "I have said that so goes Kristin Chaney, so goes our offense. We couldn't get ball reversal like we wanted to."
Southern Miss opened the game, scoring the first six points and pushing its lead to 9-1 following a Reed three-point play at the 18:20 mark. UAB then outscored Southern Miss 6-2, cutting the lead to four, 11-7, at the 17:32 mark.
Over the next five minutes, Southern Miss built a 12-point lead, 21-9, behind four different players scoring at least two points each. The Blazers then put together a 9-0 run, cutting the Golden Eagles' lead to three, 21-18 with 8:31 before the half. Southern Miss scored four straight points for a seven point lead, before UAB answered with a 6-0 run to get within two points, 26-24 at the 1:38 mark. Southern Miss led 28-24 at intermission.
The Lady Eagles finished half shooting 40.7 percent from the field, while UAB shot 29 percent.
Kendra Reed led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Ashley Harrell with 13, Amber Eugene had 12, Liz Biland and Ashley Boehnel scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
