Ezell Named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss sophomore pitcher Patrick Ezell has been named the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week for his performances against New Orleans and Saint Louis this past week.
This marks the third Golden Eagle player to receive a conference player of the week honor as Marc Maddox was named conference hitter of the week and Mike Cashion was named the Co-Pitcher of the Week earlier this season.
Ezell had his most productive week of the season, pitching eight strong innings against New Orleans on Tuesday night. He gave up one run on five hits, walked two and struck out eight batters to collect his fourth win of the season. He came back on Sunday and earned his fifth win of the season, pitching five innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out six. For the week, he posted a 1.38 ERA and opponents only hit .200 against him.
Saint Louis? pitcher Eric Bird also was named Co-Pitcher of the Week. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits, walked three and struck out seven in the Billikens? 5-1 victory over Southern Miss in game two of the three-game weekend series.
TCU?s Matt McGuirk was named the Hitter of the Week. He had at least two hits in three of the four games last week and produced five RBIs against Oklahoma and in the first game against Memphis. He also had two doubles, a triple and two home runs. He was 9-for-18 (.500) for the week and scored nine runs.
Southern Miss (27-8, 10-5 Conference USA) travels to Jackson, Miss., on Tuesday, April 19, to face Ole Miss for the third time this season at Smith-Wills Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Both teams have each won at their respective homes and this meeting will break the tie. The Golden Eagles then will host No. 1 Tulane at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in a three-game Conference USA weekend series on April 22-24. Friday?s game will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday?s at 4 p.m. and Sunday?s at 1 p.m.
