HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Southern Miss men's basketball team fell in the final non-conference road game of 2005, 61-57, to Sam Houston State, Wednesday, at Johnson Coliseum on the Sam Houston State campus.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles fell to 2-5 overall, while the Bearkats improved to 6-1.
Jarekus Singleton picked up his first career double-double in the losing effort, pacing Southern Miss with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Southern Miss opened the game with a 29-24 lead at halftime, but Sam Houston State opened the second half with a 6-0 run to take the lead, 30-29. From there, the lead changed hands several times before Reggie Rawlins his a layup with 3:40 left, making the score 53-51 and giving the hosts the lead for good.
Following Singleton, Shaun Simpson added 16 points and David Cornwell had 13.
For the Bearkats, Jejuan Plair scored 18 points and added nine assists and three steals. Shamir McDaniel and Ryan Bright each added 16 points.
Southern Miss now returns to Hattiesburg for a seven-game homestand that begins with South Alabama's visit to Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip-off time for that contest is 4 p.m.
