FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Marcus Slaughter scored 18 points and San Diego State defeated Southern Miss 79-51 Sunday for third place in the BP Top of the World Classic.
Southern Miss (1-2) jumped to a 7-0 lead. The Aztecs (2-1) pulled ahead for the first time, 12-11, when Brandon Heath took a behind-the-back pass from Matt Thomas and scored on a layup with 13 minutes left in the first half.
San Diego State took the lead for good, 31-30, with two minutes left in the first half on a basket by Slaughter and led 39-32, at intermission.
The Aztecs' lead was 13 with 15:52 remaining in the second half when Southern Mississippi coach Larry Eustachy picked up his second technical foul was ejected.
Southern Mississippi shot just 6-for-24 - 25 percent - from the floor in the second half and 1-for-13 from 3-point range.
San Diego State shot 13-for-19 in the second half and hit 10-of-13 3-point attempts.
Heath finished with 16 points and John Sharper added 12 off the bench, hitting all four of his 3-point attempts.
Jarekus Singleton led Southern Miss with 11 points and Kyle Lamonte scored 10.
